November often brings colds, sniffles, and the occasional bug. Here are some simple habits to keep our kids (and staff!) as healthy as possible.

Handwashing
It sounds simple, but handwashing is one of the best ways to keep germs from spreading. At Kiwanis Daycare Center we wash hands throughout the day – before meals, after playtime, and after going to the restroom. To make sure your child washes long enough to kill germs, have them sing a short song. We like Twinkle, Twinkle, Litte Star!

Use Tissues or Their Elbow (NOT Hands)
It can be hard, but it does help children not share germs! Gently remind children to use a tissue to wipe their nose or when they sneeze.  Keeping hands away from their faces help limit the transfer of germs.

Dress For the Weather
During colder months, kids still enjoy time outdoors on our playground. Be sure to send them in warm clothing, including heavy coats, scarves and gloves.

Eat Healthy
Encourage your child to eat healthy foods, such as fruits and vegetables, especially during cold and flu season. The extra nutrients help them fight off bugs.  While it can be easy to forget, it’s also important for children to drink enough fluids and stay hydrated.

Make Sure Children are Well Rested
While the holidays can be a busy time for many families, keeping your child on a bedtime schedule can be important to keeping them well.

While cold and flu season is a normal part of our lives with children, these simple tips can make a big difference in keeping your child healthy. At Kiwanis Daycare Center, we practice these and other healthy habits each day.
