With the new school year here already, many children start getting nervous. Will the kids like me? Will I fit in? Can I keep up? And many more questions. Whether your child will be in Pre-K, Kindergarten, Elementary School, or returning to daycare after summer, boosting your child’s confidence can make them feel prepared and excited for the new year. Here are some simple ideas:

Talk Positively About School. Children pick up clues from the adults around them, so be sure to be positive about teachers, schools and making new friends.

Set Daily Routines Before the Year Begins. Children feel secure and make transitions much easier if there are routines in place. If your children are starting at a new school, having a set bed time, wake up time and other variables give them structure in a new situation.

Teach Your Child Independence. No matter what their age, independence is important. For younger children, encourage them to put away shoes or toys, wash their hands, or carry their own backpack. Doing tasks independently helps to build confidence.

Visit Your Child’s School or Classroom Before Their First Day. At least drive by your child’s new school before the first day of class. If possible, plan a time your child can visit their classroom and see their desk. A brief visit can reduce the fear of the unknown.

Help Your Child Be Social. Set up play dates or spend time at parks. Giving your child time to interact with other children can prepare them for a more structured school atmosphere.

Celebrate! When you child tries something new, solves a problem or shows kindness, be sure to celebrate with them. By focusing on the effort, rather than being perfect, helps children be more resilient and builds self-esteem.

Offer Choices. Allow your children to make small decisions, such as picking out clothes, choosing their snack, or other small daily decisions. These small choices help children feel confident.

Listen. If your child is nervous about school, let them know it’s OK and let them express their feelings. Don’t tell them there is nothing to worry about. Instead, assure him/her that many children feel the same way.

Be Positive. Remind children that you believe in them as often as possible. Simple statements such as “You’re going to do great!” or I’m proud of you!” can make a lasting impact.

At Kiwanis Day Care Center, we know that building confidence is a long process, but requires small, daily steps. We focus on plenty of encouragement to help our children be confident and caring. When parents work with us, the results are even better!  Our goal is for each child to start the new year feeling happy, capable and ready to learn.
