A new school year is already here! Now is the perfect time for routines and good habits to help your child have a great year. Young children do best with consistent routines. Here are some healthy habits you may want to focus on this back-to-school season.

Bedtime Routine
A child who gets plenty of rest is happier and more focused. Preschoolers need 10-12 hours of sleep each night. Set a regular bedtime and stick to it, even on weekend. You may want to include quiet music, reading a favorite book and other activities to help wind down for the day.

Focus on Nutritious Food
Healthy foods help children concentrate better, regulate emotions and stay healthy. Be realistic and choose

  • Fruits and vegetables (colorful variety)
  • Whole grains (like oats, brown rice, or whole-wheat bread)
  • Lean proteins (chicken, beans, yogurt, eggs)
  • Healthy fats (nut butters, avocado, olive oil)
  • Plenty of water throughout the day

Avoid sugary drinks and overly processed snacks. Pack easy, nourishing options if your daycare doesn’t provide meals.

Handwashing
Hand washing is one of the easiest, best ways to stay healthy year-round.

  • Timing handwashing, such as singing their ABCs or Twinkle Twinkle.
  • Covering coughs and sneezed with an elbow.
  • Using tissues and disposing of them properly.
  • Not sharing cups, utensils or other personal items.

Get Moving
Children need to be active every day to grow strong and healthy. Try to make time for outdoor walks, dance parties, stretching and yoga, outdoor play.

Limit Screen Time
Too much screen time can affect sleep, mood and social interactions. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than 1 hour of screen time per day for kids ages 2-5.

Building healthy habits doesn’t have to happen all at once. Start with one small change and build from there. With a little consistency and a lot of love, your child will have everything they need for a happy, healthy start to the school year.
