Young children learn best through engagement, repetition and play. Every day interactions can be an important part of a child’s development. Set aside a time, maybe before bed, to read with your child. This will quickly become a favorite time of the day for you and your children.
- Make sure to choose an age appropriate book. Or have several books available and let your child choose. Beware: repetition is important to younger children, so be ready to read the same book over and over!
- Ask questions while reading to get your child involved. “What do you think happens next?” “Do you see the orange ball?”
- Change your voice for different characters. For example, the bad guy might have a deep, grumpy voice, but the princess has a higher pitched voice.
- Include Your Child. Maybe your child can act out a favorite part, or turn the page. Whatever it is, getting them involved will help with comprehension and retention.
Story time can be a fun, memorable time for you and your children. Don’t skip these simple activities with your child.
