Starting daycare is a big step for children and parents. Many families wonder how to know when the time is right. While every child develops at their own pace, there are several signs that your child may be ready for daycare.
Your Child Interested in Other Children
If your child enjoys watching or playing with other children, daycare can be a great way for them to build social skills. Learning to share, take turns, and cooperate with others helps prepare children for preschool and kindergarten.
Your Child Shows the Start of Some Basic Communication Skills
While it’s not necessary for your child to talk in full sentences to start daycare, he/she should be able to ask for basic needs. Asking for a drink, help or saying they are finished makes the transition to daycare easier. However, keep in mind that our Kiwanis Day Care staff are experienced in helping children learn to express themselves properly.
Your Child Follows (or Tries to Follow) Some Simple Directions
Simple instructions like “sit down,” “come here,” or “put the toy away” help children participate in daily daycare routines. Our staff can work with children to learn these skills while in their care.
Your Child Does Best with Routines and Schedules
Kiwanis Day Care operates with consistent schedules for meals, naps, playtime, and other activities. Many children are most comfortable with a predictable routine. Following routines are also an important skill for children to know before going to kindergarten.
Remember: Adjustment Takes Time
Even children who are “ready” for daycare may need time to adjust. It is normal for children to feel nervous or uncomfortable while they adjust to the new environment. After a short period of time, most children grow to enjoy daycare and look forward to seeing their friends.
If you are considering daycare for your child, we would be happy to answer your questions and help make the transition as smooth as possible. Just call us at Kiwanis Day Care Center or arrange for a tour of our facility.
