We’ve all been there: your child insists on reading the same book for bedtime every night, or sings the same song over and over. While it can be frustrating for adults, repetition is actually a powerful tool for learning in early childhood!
Repetition can make it easier for children to understand new tasks or concepts, remember information and build confidence. Each time a child repeats something, their brain is reinforcing what it has learned. Our teachers at Kiwanis Day Care Center intentionally use repetition to reinforce skills and help children retain skills.
Building Confidence: When children know what to expect, they feel safe and confident. When children feel confident, they are more curious and willing to try new things.
Language Development: Repetition plays an important part in a child’s language development. Through repeated stories and songs, children learn new words and improve pronunciation and communication.
Routines: As toddler parents know too well, daily routines can be important for everyone, especially the children. Consistent routines help toddlers know what happens next, making them feel secure and calm.
So the next time your child asks to read the same book again, remember this is an important tool. Our teachers at Kiwanis Day Care Center intentionally use repetition to reinforce skills and help children retain skills.
