looking through a window on a dark, rainy day

Everyone loves spring time! With the bright sunshine and warmer weather, we all seem to have some extra energy, especially children!  While playing outdoors is a great way to burn off that energy, spring also brings its share of rainy days. Here are some ideas for keeping little ones busy indoors when the weather won’t allow outdoor play time.

Obstacle Course:  Use cushions, chairs and paper streamers to create obstacles such as balance beams, tunnels and hurdles. Children can crawl, jump or even hop through the course, improving coordination and gross motor skills.

Freeze Dance: Have a dance party playing fun, lively music. When the music stops, everyone has to freeze in place. Great for encouraging balance and listening skills.

Animal Relay Races: Children compete by moving like a frog, snake, penguin or other animal. Make sure you have a clear space!

Ballon Volleyball: Blow up a balloon and create  nets with a laundry basket or other object. Teams attempt to “score” by getting the ball into the designated net.

Balloon Ping Pong: Use a blown-up balloon as the ball and make paddles by taping paper pates to popsicle sticks. Children hit the balloons back and forth. This fun event can improve reflexes and coordination.

The key whit these activities is to change them up often. Don’t let children get bored! You and your children will have an exciting rainy afternoon. Let us know what your favorite rainy day activity is.
