Young girl reading Hop on Pop by Dr. Seuss

Colder months mean more time spent indoors out of the harsh weather. Keeping your child busy can be challenging without relying too heavily on televisions and tablets.  Instead, plan a trip to your local library and find these or similar books your children will love. If you need help selecting books for your child’s age, the library staff will be happy to help.

Toddlers (Ages 1-3)

These short, rhyming books are perfect for groups or home.

  • “The Snowy Day” by Ezra Jack Keats
  • “Bear Snores On” by Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman
  • “Penguin Problems” by Jory John and Lane Smith

Preschoolers (Ages 3-5)

  • “Owl Moon” by Jane Yolen
  • “Sneezy the Snowman” by Maureen Wright
  • “The Mitten” by Jan Brett

Early Readers (Ages 5-7)

Children learning to read will enjoy reading simple books themselves, and often enjoy reading more narrative books together.

  • “Snowmen at Night” by Caralyn Buehner and Mark Buehner
  • “Little Penguins” by Cynthia Rylan
  • “The Biggest Snowman Ever” by Steven Kroll

There are a lot of great children’s books available. Reading, both together and independently,  is a great winter activity that children love and can help increase their skills. While we often include books into our curriculum at Kiwanis Daycare, reading at home can be an important step in your child’s development.
